WHO WE ARE
Meet Our Founder
Glen Johnson developed a national reputation as a reporter and political analyst before expanding his scope internationally as a senior communications official in the State Department.
Working alongside Secretary of State John Kerry every day he was in office, Johnson traveled nearly 1.4 million miles to 91 countries and all seven continents as the secretary worked to advance the president’s foreign policy agenda and draw attention to his own priorities.
Devising and executing plans
As the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary of State for strategic communications, Johnson worked with the chief of staff, spokesperson, and speechwriter to devise plans for promoting the secretary’s agenda. These included activities and events domestically and abroad that highlighted his priorities. They also encompassed written and visual campaigns to deepen the public’s understanding of the secretary’s mission.
Johnson managed a “Hometown Diplomacy” program under which the secretary’s counterparts from Japan, China, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and an array of European countries visited Boston for business meetings leavened with local cultural events and meals prepared by some of the city’s top chefs.
He also organized interviews with major national and international outlets, and coordinated with a digital team to promote the secretary’s work across all of the Department’s social media platforms.
Johnson also took over 100,000 photos as the secretary’s official photographer. They were delivered home in realtime fashion and became the backbone of the Department’s social media campaign.
This work became the eventual foundation for his Amazon best-selling book about 21st century diplomacy, “Window Seat on the World.” It was published by Disruption Books and launched in July 2019 on the CBS News program “Face the Nation.” The book went on to win a 2020 Benjamin Franklin Award from The Independent Book Publishers Association. Johnson has spoken about it on college campuses, television programs, and cruise ships.
As Johnson completed his State Department tenure, Secretary Kerry wrote that there were “no words to express what an essential and terrific part of this team you have been.”
A citation issued to him said he “advanced the secretary of State’s foreign policy priorities by fostering an environment for successful diplomacy and documented the historic moments in our international engagement for the world to see.”
In 2023, Johnson had a second stint in public service, this time as director of communications and external affairs for newly elected Essex County (Mass.) District Attorney Paul F. Tucker.
Johnson established all facets of his communications operation, launched internal and external communications tools, and built strong relationships in the media, law enforcement, and civic communities.
One local media executive wrote to him: “You have been the best person to ever hold the DA’s communication job. I’ve appreciated your organization, timely responsiveness, sensitivity, and transparency.”
A police chief also wrote, “We have greatly enjoyed working with you over the past months. You went above and beyond helping out (our department) in your role.”
BUILDING OFF JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE
Prior to his four years in federal service, Johnson spent 27 years as a reporter. He progressed from the City News Bureau of Chicago through The Salem Evening News and Lowell Sun newspapers, before working in Boston and Washington for The Associated Press and The Boston Globe.
Along the way, he covered five presidential campaigns, eight political conventions, and visited all 48 continental states writing spot news and feature stories, and, most recently, shooting video interviews with voters.
He was serving as Politics Editor for boston.com, writing breaking news for the Globe-owned website, and a weekly print column named “Political Intelligence” for the Boston Sunday Globe, before he joined the State Department.
He returned to journalism for 18 months as Politics Editor at Axios, co-managing the Politics team, and launching and editing the weeknightly Sneak Peek newsletter. Johnson is practiced at writing and editing in the company’s signature SmartBrevity™ writing style, the foundation for the Axios HQ corporate communications software.
